Epidemic Parotitis(Mumps)

Mumps Virus:

- An acute contagious viral disease defined by fever and swelling of the glands.

Mumps

- Mumps is a very contagious infection .
- A virus that causes inflammation of the glands .

Viral Isolation:

- Can be isolated from the CSF during the first 2 - 3 days after the onset of diseasehttp://viraldiseasesd.wikispaces.com/Mumps

- Present in urine and saliva for 2 to 3 weeks

- Monkey kidney cells are generally used

Serious Problems are rare but include:

- Deafness
- Swelling of the

• brain
• spinal chord
• testicles
• breast or ovaries

- Pregnancy loss

Symptoms:

- Fever

- Poor appetite and vomiting

- Lower abdominal pain in woman

- Headache

- Upper abdominal pain , nausea and vomiting

- Soreness and swelling in the glands

- Earache that is aggravated by chewing

- Pain when swallowing or opening of the mouth

- Pain while drinking / eating anything citrus or sour

- Tiredness and aching in muscles



Miscellaneous:

- Mumps during pregnency is not very frequent

 Common Methods Of Transmission :

- Most common transmission , is coughing your sneezing .
- Another transmission of mumps virus , also happens when someone touches and infected surface,
and then touches the eyes , nose or mouth .

Treatment :

- Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen are commonly used to reduce fever

- Treatment includes analgesics for pain, antipyretics for fever, and adequate fluid intake to prevent dehydration from fever and anorexia.

- Warm moist towels to help with swelling

Prevention :

- Washing hands well with soap and water
- Not sharing food or drinks
- Cleaning surfaces that are constantly being touched
- Cover your mouth/nose while sneezing or coughing
